The opportunity presented was to design and furnish a social space within a newly built sixth form centre at Magdalen College School. The design challenge involved transforming the original “airport lounge” layout into a welcoming and engaging environment, while working within the existing architectural framework.
Bia Lorenzo was the designer of this project during her tenure at Office Profile / Pinnacle Furniture.
The Approach: Designing an Engaging Space
To achieve this, a comprehensive concept design and furniture plan were developed. The colour scheme was carefully selected, drawing inspiration from the school’s crest to inject vibrancy into the space, which featured prominent natural oak elements. Lockers were strategically placed to delineate dining, socializing and studying zones, and a variety of furniture shapes and arrangements were used to add visual interest to the long, rectangular space.
The Result: a Student-Centric Social Space
The final outcome was a transformed social space that successfully exceeded expectations. The cohesive colour scheme and the thoughtful arrangement of furniture and storage created a dynamic and engaging environment. The space now serves as a vibrant hub for students, reflecting the school’s identity and fostering a sense of community.
